The Battle at Aruman
© 2001 Andrew Dormeier

The smaller demons were temporarily stunned. It seemed that they no more expected the gargantuan demon to fall than the demon itself did. Not wanting to waste this opportunity, Artemus created a shockwave of air in-between the demons to drive them apart. He sprinted down the temporary westward path and back out onto the open plains. The demon army regrouped almost immediately and came after the weakened warrior. Continuing to run away from the city and the demons, Artemus pitched Obsidian into the air forward and above him and guided it with his mind back into its sheath on his back. Suddenly the clouds parted above and the outline of the tan Gallant Force came swooping down to eighty meters above Artemus' head.
"Sir, sorry I'm late. It took several more minutes than anticipated to break the cloud cover," the voice from Artemus' wrist chirped.
"Not a problem, Falinor. That was perfect timing. Is the starboard rear airlock open?"
"Yes sir, notify me when you're on board. Falinor out."
Artemus took one more stride and then jumped. Using all the power he could muster, he pushed himself farther and curved space-time just enough to reach the open hatch far above the ground. He hit the door control panel and the deafening wind stopped rushing by. "Falinor, I'm alive and well," said Artemus as he headed for the bridge, "bring us out of the atmosphere and go to full battle status".
"Right away sir," said one of the wall speakers, bearing the elder elf's voice.
Artemus sighed heavily as he jumped off a ladder on deck two and jogged to the front of the Gallant Force. He had to prepare for the possibility of another demon ship in orbit of the planet or somewhere else nearby. He had hoped that he could get a little peace for once, but apparently he was wrong.
